Fitz Henry Lane, 1846
A late afternoon view across Boston Harbour, where sunlight spreads softly over the water and the city sits far off in the distance.

Lane paints Boston Harbour in the late afternoon, with the light scattering gently off the water. His father was a shipbuilder, and the ships and their intricate rigging are rendered with great care and accuracy. At the far left, a steamboat appears, a sign of changing technology; boats of this kind carried passengers between Boston and Gloucester. The work is oil on canvas, dated to around 1846–1847, and is held at the Cleveland Museum of Art.
On your wall: A calm harbour scene that suits living rooms, studies and hallways, and would sit well in spaces with a nautical or traditional feel.

Fitz Henry Lane was an American painter and printmaker. His work later became associated with a style known as Luminism, a name that reflects his use of pervasive light. Light is the thread to follow in his pictures, shaping the atmosphere of each scene and drawing the viewer gently into it.
