Piet Mondrian, 1903
A mill beside the River Gein under moonlight, painted by Piet Mondrian in 1903, long before the geometric abstraction he later became known for.

This 1903 painting shows a mill standing along the River Gein by night, lit by the moon. It is the work of Piet Mondrian, the Dutch painter who later moved away from figurative subjects towards abstraction and, in time, pared his art down to simple geometric elements. Here the subject is a recognisable Dutch scene, a quiet waterside view after dark. It offers a chance to see an artist better known for his later style at an earlier point in his career.
On your wall: Its nocturnal, waterside subject suits calm spaces such as a study, bedroom or quiet corner of a living room, where a restrained landscape can set a contemplative tone.
