Dumpfes Rot, painted by Wassily Kandinsky in 1927, is an oil on canvas measuring 66 by 76 centimetres. It belongs to his Bauhaus years, and it is a fully abstract composition. Geometric lines, grids, circles and triangles are set across a muted brick-red ground, so the eye moves from one shape to the next without a fixed subject to settle on. The title, which can be read as 'dull red', points to the colour that anchors the whole picture. A monogram sits at the lower left. It is catalogued as number 400 among his works.
On your wall: Its warm, muted red and crisp geometry suit a living room, study or hallway, especially in modern interiors where a considered touch of colour is wanted.

Wassily Kandinsky was a Russian painter and art theorist, born in Moscow. He came to painting relatively late, beginning his studies at thirty. He went on to work in Germany during the late Belle Époque and the interwar years, and is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of abstraction in Western art.
