Leopoldo Metlicovitz designed this poster in 1906 for the International Exhibition in Milan, which ran from April to November, and for the opening of the Simplon Tunnel. It shows a figure dressed in red alongside a locomotive emerging from a tunnel, a direct image of the new rail passage the event celebrated. Metlicovitz was an Italian painter, illustrator and poster designer, and the bold, clear composition suits the poster form.
On your wall: Its strong red and its railway subject suit a study, hallway or living room, particularly where vintage travel posters or transport-themed pictures already hang.
