Leopoldo Metlicovitz, an Italian painter, illustrator and poster designer, created this advertising poster in 1916. It belongs to a group of Italian opera posters from that year and promotes a work called Il ragno azzurro, meaning 'The Blue Spider'. It is a good example of the lettered, illustrated posters that once announced performances in the street, and it carries the character of its period. Poster design was central to Metlicovitz's career, and this piece shows that side of his work.
On your wall: Its vintage poster character suits a study, a hallway, a living room or any space with a love of theatre, opera and early twentieth-century graphic design.
