This is a photograph by Karl Blossfeldt, made in 1915 and titled Blumenbachia hieronymi, the name of a plant. Blossfeldt was a German photographer and sculptor, best known for his close-up images of plants and other living things. He was drawn, as his father had been, to nature and to the ways plants grow. A selection of these studies was later published in 1929 as Urformen der Kunst. Here, that attention to plant life is the subject: a single botanical form, looked at closely and simply.
On your wall: Its restrained, botanical subject suits calm interiors such as a study, hallway or bedroom, and sits well in a minimalist space or beside books and natural materials.
