Wassily Kandinsky painted Black and Violet in 1923. The title points to the two colours that shape it, and as an abstract work it invites you to follow its colour and form rather than look for a recognisable scene. Kandinsky was born in Moscow and began his painting studies at thirty. He worked in Germany and is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of abstraction in Western art, which makes this piece a good way into his approach to non-representational painting.
On your wall: With its deep black and violet tones, it suits a study, a living room or a hallway where a modern, abstract piece can stand out against calmer walls.
