About this artwork

This oil painting on fabric is titled The Circus and is signed and dated 1889. It comes from the start of Suzanne Valadon's career, before she began to develop her mature style in 1891, and some people see that as the reason it looks different from her better-known work. Its attribution has been debated, with some authorities rejecting it and others supporting it. Valadon was a prolific painter who never trained formally, and she was the mother of the artist Maurice Utrillo. The painting is now in the Cleveland Museum of Art.

On your wall: A circus subject suits a lively spot such as a living room, hallway or study, where an early work by a self-taught painter can invite a closer look.
