Painted in 1646 in oil on wood, this Dutch landscape comes from the early years of Jacob van Ruisdael's career, when he was still a teenager. Even so, it shows the approach that would mark his work: simple, everyday motifs are given a grand, heroic presence. Dark shapes are massed together in the foreground, and they stand in strong contrast to the open, sunlit plain stretching away to the left. The title points to a windmill as the subject, set within that broad countryside.
On your wall: Its dark foreground and bright, open plain suit studies, libraries, living rooms and hallways where a calm, traditional landscape can add depth.
