Ferdinand Hodler painted Schynige Platte in 1909, working in oil on canvas. The title points to the well-known viewpoint in the Bernese Oberland, and the picture belongs to the Swiss landscape tradition for which the artist is known. Hodler was a Swiss painter who began with realistic portraits, landscapes and genre scenes, and later developed a personal Symbolist approach that he called parallelism. This work is a fine one to spend time with if you enjoy mountain scenery seen through a Swiss painter's eye.
On your wall: Suited to living rooms, studies and hallways where a calm Alpine landscape can bring a sense of open air and distance.
