This photograph by Eugène Atget shows the Rue Pape Carpentier in Paris's 6th arrondissement. It is an albumen silver print, a photographic process that gives images a soft tonal range. The print measures 22.1 by 17.5 cm and is mounted on an older backing. Atget set out to document the architecture and street scenes of Paris, and this work belongs to that wider effort. It is now held in the collection of the Musée Carnavalet, Histoire de Paris.
On your wall: Its black and white tones and city subject suit studies, hallways, living rooms and other calm spaces, especially alongside other photography or classic, understated interiors.

Eugène Atget was a French photographer and self-styled flâneur who set out to record the architecture and street scenes of Paris before modernisation swept them away. He sold his pictures to artists and craftspeople, and later inspired the surrealists. Berenice Abbott first published most of his photographs after his death, when his reputation began to grow.
