About this artwork

Painted in oil on canvas in 1919, this is an abstract work built from a few bold elements. Large yellow-green arcs curve across a dark ground, and a horizontal red-orange streak crosses them. O'Keeffe made it in New York, after arriving there from Texas. In a letter to a friend she described watching lightning light up the sky, first in one place and then another, sometimes as sheet lightning and sometimes with a sharp, bright zigzag across it. She sat on a fence for a long time, simply looking. The painting is now in the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

On your wall: Its strong curves and dark ground suit a living room, study or hallway where a bold abstract piece can anchor the space, especially against pale or neutral walls.
