About this artwork

This is a portrait of Alexandre Dumas père, the French novelist and playwright who wrote The Count of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers. Nadar photographed him in 1855, and the two were friends. The image is a salted paper print made from a wet collodion negative, a process typical of French photography in the nineteenth century. Dumas was one of many celebrities who sat for Nadar. The photographer is also remembered for lending his studio in 1874 to a group of artists, who held the first exhibition of Impressionist painting there, with works by Berthe Morisot among them.

On your wall: A quiet black and white portrait that suits a study, library, hallway or sitting room, especially alongside books or other framed photographs.

About Nadar

Nadar was the pseudonym of Gaspard-Félix Tournachon, a French photographer, caricaturist, journalist and novelist, who also took to the air as a balloonist. In 1858 he became the first person to take aerial photographs. His photographic portraits appear in many major national collections, and his son Paul carried on the studio after him.
