Atget's photograph looks at the entrance to the courtyard of the petit hôtel de Guiche, an eighteenth-century private mansion in Paris that stood beside the larger hôtel de Guiche. The portal still looks much as it does here, though only fragments of the old buildings survive within the modern structures behind it. The houses were named for the de Guiche family, aristocrats who lived there in the mid-1700s; their son was guillotined in 1794. Atget made the image as a gold-toned albumen print, and it reflects his aim of recording the architecture of Paris as the city modernised.
On your wall: Its black and white tones and architectural subject suit a study, hallway or living room, particularly alongside other monochrome prints or in classically styled interiors.

Eugène Atget was a French photographer and self-styled flâneur who set out to record the architecture and street scenes of Paris before modernisation swept them away. He sold his pictures to artists and craftspeople, and later inspired the surrealists. Berenice Abbott first published most of his photographs after his death, when his reputation began to grow.
