Eugène Atget made this photograph around 1900, and it is titled Olive Tree, Nice. It is an albumen print, a photographic process common in the nineteenth century. Atget, born in 1857 and active in France, is remembered as a pioneer of documentary photography. He sold his work to artists and craftspeople, and later became an inspiration for the surrealists, though he did not live to see the wide acclaim his photographs would eventually receive. This print is now held by the Art Institute of Chicago.
On your wall: Its monochrome tones and restrained, documentary character suit studies, hallways, living rooms and reading corners, especially where a calm, understated touch is wanted.

Eugène Atget was a French photographer and self-styled flâneur who set out to record the architecture and street scenes of Paris before modernisation swept them away. He sold his pictures to artists and craftspeople, and later inspired the surrealists. Berenice Abbott first published most of his photographs after his death, when his reputation began to grow.
