Jean-Baptist Frénet, 1855
A mother and her two children, gathered in a plain setting with an easy, unposed feeling that was rare in portraits of the 1850s.

Jean-Baptiste Frénet made this family grouping around 1855 as a salted paper print from a collodion negative. He had been a painter, but his anti-government political activity closed off professional opportunities, so he took up photography in 1850. A decade later he opened a commercial portrait studio. He liked simple, plain settings and let the interactions between sitters show their personalities and relationships. This picture was probably made for his own pleasure, and it has a casual immediacy that was unusual for the time, in both painted and photographed portraits.
On your wall: Its quiet, intimate subject and soft photographic tones suit living rooms, bedrooms, hallways and reading corners, especially in calm, neutral interiors.
