Charles Marville, 1856
Clouds fill most of this Paris view, with the dome of Les Invalides rising dark against a restless sky.

Charles Marville frames the city so that the dome of the chapel of Les Invalides, a retirement home and hospital for military veterans, stands out on the skyline. In the 1850s, the coatings on photographic plates could not properly record both land and sky in one exposure. Marville chose to expose for the sky, so the clouds are full of drama while the buildings below merge into a dark mass. The result gives the sky the greater weight, and the scale and majesty of nature seem to overwhelm what people have built. It is an albumen print made from a wet collodion negative, dated 1856–57.
On your wall: Its soft greys and dark skyline suit a study, living room, hallway or library, where a quiet, contemplative black and white image can hold a wall.

Charles Marville was the pseudonym of Charles François Bossu, a French photographer who turned his camera mainly to architecture, landscapes and the city. He worked with both paper and glass negatives. He is best known for recording old Parisian quarters before they were demolished and rebuilt under Haussmann's modernisation, and in 1862 he was named official photographer of Paris.
