About this artwork

This is the January sheet from La Belle Jardinière, made by Eugène Grasset in 1896. A young woman in a yellow headscarf and an orange-brown skirt works in the garden with a spade, and behind her stands a fountain whose water has frozen. The word JANVIER is lettered at the upper right, naming the month. Holly appears among the motifs, and the print belongs to Grasset's series of the months. The sheet has wide margins, and pencil notes in a hand other than the printer's are visible on it. Grasset was a Swiss decorative artist working in Paris, and is regarded as a pioneer of Art Nouveau design.

On your wall: Its warm yellows and orange-browns against a wintry scene would suit a kitchen, hallway or reading corner, especially in a room with a retro or vintage feel.
