Childe Hassam painted Geraniums in 1888–89, working in oil on canvas. The picture is upright and fairly small, about 46 by 33 centimetres. It brings together a woman and potted geraniums, with a watering can among the details, so that figure and flowers share the scene. Hassam was an American Impressionist, and the painting sits comfortably within that tradition of everyday subjects. Today it belongs to The Hyde Collection.
On your wall: Its gentle domestic subject and floral theme suit a hallway, bedroom, reading corner or dining room, especially where a calm, personal touch is wanted.

Childe Hassam was an American Impressionist painter, known above all for his urban and coastal scenes. Alongside Mary Cassatt and John Henry Twachtman, he helped introduce Impressionism to American collectors, dealers and museums. Over his career he produced more than 3,000 works, including oils, watercolours, etchings and lithographs, and he was an influential artist in early twentieth-century America.
