Ingres made this sheet of studies in 1842 as preparation for a series of stained glass windows for the Chapel of Saint Ferdinand in Paris. He sketched four sets of hands that seem to cascade down the page in one rhythmic motion, and the way they are arranged on the sheet is part of the pleasure of looking. The drawing is in graphite with traces of white heightening on ivory laid paper. By choosing graphite, Ingres recalled the metalpoint drawings of Raphael, deliberately echoing the Renaissance master.
On your wall: Its pale paper tones and quiet graphite lines suit calm interiors such as studies, hallways, bedrooms and living rooms with a restrained, modern feel.

Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres was a French Neoclassical painter who drew deeply on earlier artistic traditions and sought to uphold academic principles at a time when Romanticism was gaining ground. He saw himself as a history painter, yet his portraits, painted and drawn, are regarded as his finest legacy. His expressive handling of form and space later influenced Matisse and Picasso.
