This is a poster by Jean d'Ylen from 1929, made to advertise coffee from Brazil. Its French title, "Les Cafés du Brésil, alimentent l'Univers", translates roughly as "Brazil's coffees feed the universe", a bold claim that sums up its promotional purpose. It belongs to the tradition of French food and drink advertising posters of the late 1920s, when striking graphic design was a familiar way to draw attention to everyday products. The lettering and the message are part of its appeal, and it makes a good piece for anyone who enjoys vintage advertising and a link to coffee culture.
On your wall: Well suited to a kitchen, café corner or dining area, and equally at home in a hallway or study where vintage advertising adds character.
