About this artwork

This is a lithographed poster made by Edward Penfield in 1896 to advertise the September issue of Harper's Magazine. Its subject is a woman with a book, a theme that suited a magazine poster of the period. The fashion of 1896 is part of its charm, and it records how people dressed and read at the time. Penfield was an American illustrator working in the Golden Age of American Illustration, and he is often called the father of the American poster. A impression of this poster is held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

On your wall: It would sit well in a study, library, reading nook or hallway, wherever a touch of vintage graphic character and a love of books is welcome.
