About this artwork

This is a poster made in 1894 by Edward Penfield to announce the November issue of Harper's Magazine. It belongs to a series of Harper's posters he produced, and it sits among images that reflect the fashions of the 1890s. Penfield was an American illustrator working in what is often called the Golden Age of American Illustration, and he is widely regarded as the father of the American poster. His work also played a part in shaping the development of graphic design. Today the poster is held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Department of Drawings and Prints.

On your wall: It suits a study, reading nook, hallway or dining room where a touch of period graphic design adds character, especially alongside books, wood or other vintage pieces.
