Auguste Louis Lepère, 1914
A battleship's long guns point out through drifting smoke as a shell bursts in the foreground, drawn in deep black ink with touches of white.

Auguste Louis Lepère made this drawing in France in 1914. It shows a battleship with its turrets and long guns aimed to the right, wrapped in smoke, while a shell bursts in the foreground. He worked with brush and black ink over pencil, then added white highlights. Those highlights lift the smoke and the blast out of the dark ink. The result is a dramatic, tightly controlled scene built almost entirely from black and white, with the ship's heavy forms set against the swirling haze around it.
On your wall: Its stark black-and-white palette and bold, dramatic subject suit a study, hallway or modern living space where a graphic, monochrome piece can anchor the wall.
