About this artwork

Here the sorceress Armida comes upon the knight Rinaldo as he sleeps and resolves to carry him off in her chariot, borne by clouds. The tale comes from Torquato Tasso's 1581 poem Gerusalemme liberata, set during the First Crusade. When Rinaldo wakes, he falls for Armida and forgets his mission in Jerusalem. Tiepolo gives the scene a vast, open sky and landscape, with figures, draperies, clouds and trees carefully arranged to bring it to life. Although Tasso's story sets love against duty, Tiepolo's magical world, with its fresh colours and dense, creamy oil paint, seems to dwell on love's enchantment. The painting probably hung in a large hall of the Palazzo Corner in Venice, alongside others from the same story.

On your wall: Its airy sky and luminous colours would lift a drawing room, dining room or entrance hall, especially where classic furnishings call for a painting with movement and a sense of story.
