Annibale Carracci, 1582
A boy raises a glass to drink, and the light bends and distorts as it passes through it. Carracci chose an everyday moment and observed it closely.

Annibale Carracci painted this early work in oil on canvas in 1582–83. It shows a boy drinking, an unrefined everyday subject rather than a grand or elegant one. Carracci was interested in looking closely at the natural world, and you can see it in the way light passing through the glass distorts the forms. Even the rough texture of the canvas adds to the sense of directness. Working with his brother Agostino and cousin Lodovico, he helped bring reform to Italian art, finding a path between the artificial polish of Mannerism and the heightened drama of Caravaggio.
On your wall: Its human scale and unfussy subject suit a study, a dining room or a reading corner, where classic painting sits comfortably alongside books and wooden furniture.
