About this artwork

Johann Georg Platzer specialised in small, finely detailed paintings made for a collector's cabinet, and this one was painted in oil on copper in Austria in the 1740s or 1750s. At its centre is an idealised portrait of the artist himself, wearing a fur-lined robe and holding up a painting for a visiting connoisseur. Around him the studio teems with live models, pupils and assistants, with works by earlier artists close at hand. Paintings on the wall, the easel and the floor recall great masters of the past and together form an allegory of the five senses. The scene presents painting as a noble, intellectual pursuit that rests on rigorous training.

On your wall: Well suited to a study, library or reading room, where its crowded, finely observed scene rewards a closer look.
