About this artwork

Danaë's father feared a prophecy that his grandson would one day kill him, so he shut his daughter away to keep suitors from her. Jupiter, king of the gods, fell in love with her all the same and came to her as gold streaming from the sky. Gentileschi followed Caravaggio's approach of painting directly from models, bringing them close to the front of the picture. This gives the scene a startling, tangible presence. Yet the graceful handling of paint and gesture adds a poetic quality that is distinctly his own. It is oil on canvas, painted around 1623.

On your wall: Its warm, golden subject suits a living room, study or bedroom where a classical, quietly dramatic picture can bring a sense of history and intimacy.

About Orazio Gentileschi

Orazio Gentileschi was an Italian painter, born in the Republic of Florence. He began his career in Rome, where he worked in a Mannerist style. Much of his early work involved painting the figures within decorative schemes designed by other artists, a collaborative way of working that shaped his beginnings as a painter.
