Johann Zoffany, 1772
A family gathers around a card table in an unhurried moment, their clothes quietly showing that they are in mourning.

This is a conversation piece, a type of picture invented in England in the 1700s and loved for showing families in a relaxed, informal way. Here, a father and daughter and a mother and son are working out their next move in a hand of cards. The clothing tells a quieter story: the family has recently lost a loved one, so the parents wear full mourning in black, while the siblings wear lesser mourning in mauve, white and grey. Zoffany painted it in oil on canvas around 1772.
On your wall: Its soft mauves, greys and blacks and its calm domestic subject suit a dining room, study, library or traditionally styled sitting room.
