About this artwork

This painting shows the Old Testament story from Genesis in which Abraham, on God's command, agrees to sacrifice his son Isaac. As he lifts the knife, an angel appears to stop him. Andrea del Sarto gives father and son a rich range of feeling, from grief and resignation to fear and sudden realisation. Their poses draw on ancient sculpture and Michelangelo. Painted in oil on wood in Florence around 1527, the work was left unfinished, so we can see how he built it up. He transferred a drawing to the panel, strengthened the chalk lines with paint (look at the donkey on the right), then worked thin, brushy layers of colour across the whole surface, changing the composition as he went.

On your wall: Its serious subject and dramatic figures suit a study, library or dining room, and bring a thoughtful presence to traditional or calmly furnished interiors.

About Andrea del Sarto

Andrea del Sarto was a Florentine painter whose career flourished during the High Renaissance and early Mannerism. He was admired as a fresco decorator, an altarpiece painter, a portraitist, a draughtsman and a colourist. In his lifetime he was highly regarded as an artist who worked 'without errors', though later fame favoured Leonardo, Michelangelo and Raphael.
