About this artwork

Alfred Stieglitz made this photograph from the back of a moving train as it left the train yard at Long Island City, New York. It appeared in the first issue of Camera Work in January 1903. The subject is rough and industrial, yet the composition is graceful, which draws attention to the photographer's artistic intent rather than to the technical skill of making a picture. The title points in the same direction, suggesting the artist's part in a mechanical process of urban change. This gelatin silver print dates from 1902 and was printed in 1920/39. Stieglitz worked throughout his career to have photography accepted as an art form.

On your wall: Its black and white tones and urban, industrial subject suit studies, offices, lofts and modern living spaces where a restrained, graphic image is wanted.
