Jean-Jacques Heilmann lived in Pau, a town in the foothills of the Pyrenees that was popular with British holidaymakers and was also one of several centres of photography in France at the time. Here he turned his camera on the road leading through the mountains to Eaux-Chaudes, a village known for its hot springs. The road had only been built in 1849, and it made the journey much easier while opening up striking views. Heilmann made the photograph around 1855 as a salted paper print from a wet collodion negative.
On your wall: Its monochrome tones and rugged mountain subject suit a study, hallway, library or living room where a calm, contemplative landscape is welcome.
