About this artwork

Édouard Baldus made this photograph of the Pavilion Richelieu at the Louvre in Paris in 1856–57. In 1854 he and two other artists were commissioned to record the building of the New Louvre, one of Napoleon III's grandest projects. The new wings joined the Louvre Palace, begun in the late 1100s, to the Tuileries Palace, begun in 1564. The pavilion had been finished shortly before the picture was taken. It first housed government offices and only became part of the Louvre Museum in 1993. Baldus made the image as a salted paper print, albumenized, from a wet collodion negative.

On your wall: Its black and white architectural subject suits studies, libraries, hallways and calm living rooms, especially where classic or understated interiors are wanted.

About Édouard Baldus

Édouard Baldus was a French photographer who turned his camera to three main subjects: landscapes, architecture and the railways. His work brings together the built and natural worlds, giving buildings, scenery and railway lines the same careful attention. For anyone drawn to early photography or to the character of France's landscapes and structures, his pictures offer a thoughtful place to start.
