About this artwork

This is one of five privately commissioned prints, known as surimono, which together make up a single image of people collecting sea life at low tide. Across the upper part of each sheet sit witty poems, two per print, ten in all. They were written by members of a poetry circle based in Edo, now Tokyo, led by Hisakataya Misora, who contributed four of them. The composition may have been printed in April, which was thought the best time of year for beachcombing. Made as a colour woodblock print, it comes from a pentaptych, a work in five parts, and dates to around 1830.

On your wall: Its seaside subject and the poetry across the top suit a study, a hallway or a living room where a quiet, detailed picture can be enjoyed up close.
