About this artwork

This 1870s albumen print shows Ranbir Singh (1830–1885), a ruler of the Dogra dynasty, seated on his throne among members of his court. Turbaned courtiers and a boy surround him, and soldiers stand in uniform, one wearing a British-style helmet. Courtiers in the front row sit on European-style chairs. The oval format was popular among the British, and these details together point to the Dogra rulers' allegiance to British colonial rule. Ranbir Singh supported the British during the Uprising of 1857.

On your wall: Its tonal range and formal, historical subject suit studies, libraries, hallways and calm living rooms, especially alongside wood, leather or muted, traditional furnishings.
