Edgar Degas, 1895
One dancer, seen from four viewpoints, in loose, dripping washes of colour that Degas even marked with his thumb.

This painting may show a single dancer observed from four different viewpoints. She stands in an undefined setting, surrounded by wisps of colour applied so freely that the paint ran and dripped. Degas also pressed circles into the foreground with his thumb. On a canvas around six feet wide, such boldness would probably have startled his contemporaries, though it might pass more easily in a small sketch. Showing several views of one figure was equally radical, and the idea may have been inspired by the photographs of Eadweard Muybridge. Degas painted it in oil around 1895.
On your wall: Its loose, airy handling and graceful figure suit a living room, bedroom or study, where it can bring a sense of movement to a quiet wall.
