About this artwork

Kitagawa Sōsetsu painted this pair of six-panel folding screens in the mid-1600s, during Japan's Edo period, using ink and colour on paper. He worked for the Maeda family, powerful rulers of what is now Ishikawa Prefecture on Honshū's central northern coast. Screens like these served as room dividers and backdrops in their grand residences. Sōsetsu is thought to have studied under Tawaraya Sōsetsu, a pupil of Tawaraya Sōtatsu, the Kyoto master regarded as the originator of the Rinpa style. By choosing a painter from this lineage, the Maeda connected their taste to that of the imperial capital and signalled their standing. The work is considered one of the artist's finest.

On your wall: Its flowers and grasses suit calm living rooms, bedrooms and entrance halls, particularly where a natural, softly composed backdrop is wanted.
