Captain Linnaeus Tripe, 1858
A towering temple gateway, photographed in 1858 and left free of any crowd, so that the stone seems to stand outside time.

Captain Linnaeus Tripe made this photograph in 1858 as an albumenized salt print. It shows a gateway, or gopuram, of the Minakshi Sundareshvara Temple, whose complex was first established in the 1100s and expanded over the following five hundred years. Enclosure walls were added, with gateways topped by tall superstructures decorated with miniature temples and images of deities. Tripe's image is in black and white and deliberately free of people. To achieve that pristine effect, he would have had to clear the scene of worshippers and onlookers. The result gives the monument a quiet, timeless presence.
On your wall: Its monochrome tones and strong architectural form suit a study, hallway or living room, particularly in calm, neutral interiors where the detailed stonework can be appreciated.
