Jean Achille Benouville, 1846
A lone rider on a white horse gallops through a deep landscape, beneath dark trees and a restless sky.

Painted in oil on canvas in 1846 by the French artist Jean Achille Benouville, this landscape follows an ideal, classical manner, yet the darkly shaded trees and turbulent sky bring in a romantic mood. A single rider gallops along a path in the foreground. The scene is arranged in three clear zones that recede into the distance: the path first, then a lake or river in the middle ground, and finally a rocky mountain and the sea far away. The eye is drawn steadily back through the space, following the movement of the horse.
On your wall: Its deep space and moody, darkly shaded tones suit a study, living room or hallway where a calm yet dramatic landscape can draw the eye.
